As the author who penned Immortal Truths: Timeless Wisdom for Career Success, I’ve often reflected on the profound impact of purpose and empathy in our professional lives. Today, as AI technology increasingly reshapes industries, I see an opportunity—and a moral imperative—for business leaders to embrace these very principles.
I am in the process of integrating AI into a new business venture. What struck me was not just the importance of the innovative use of technology, but the guiding philosophy behind it. The new business will use AI to eliminate the need for certain tedious jobs that would have traditionally been part of the business. In my view the very act of “destroying” outdated types of jobs creates a moral imperative to ensure that the remaining roles are deeply satisfying for employees. In other words, like a phoenix, out of the ashes of the old something fresh and beautiful must be created. Crucially, it is key to reinvest much of the savings from reduced headcount into fostering a better environment for the team and enhancing the customer experience, rather than simply extracting higher profits. This approach, I believe, embodies the very essence of the “Immortal Truths.”
In “How Much Gold Can Attila the Hun Carry? Why Purpose Is Key,” I emphasized that “fulfillment comes from more than wealth or power.” We all possess an “innate need to provide service and to have a sense of purpose.” When a business is purposeful, it cultivates a powerful workforce. This philosophy behind the new business aligns perfectly: by using AI to free individuals from the mundane, the business is creating space for more meaningful contributions, thus imbuing work with greater purpose and satisfaction.
My book also discusses the responsibility of leaders to balance the needs of various stakeholders—shareholders, employees, customers, and society. While the allure of maximizing shareholder returns is strong, I argue true leadership involves ensuring that “all groups are roughly equally serviced” over time. The decision to prioritize employee well-being and customer delight alongside profitability reflects this balanced perspective. It transforms the business from a mere profit-generating machine into an ecosystem that genuinely contributes to the welfare of all involved.
Furthermore, Immortal Truths highlights the power of empathy and adaptability. I’ve witnessed the suffering caused by a lack of empathy in the workplace. A commitment to creating a better environment for employees mitigates the pain caused by disruptive changes to the work environment. In the face of disruptive technologies like AI, the ability to pivot when faced with new challenges, as discussed in the book, is paramount. AI, far from being a threat, can become a tool for positive transformation, allowing businesses to adapt and evolve towards more humane and fulfilling models.
Ultimately, the integration of AI presents a profound choice. Will it merely optimize the bottom line, or will it be leveraged to create a more purposeful, empathetic, and ultimately more successful business landscape for everyone? I argue that we are morally bound to make sure it is the latter because with wisdom and resolve, we can truly build a future where technological advancement and human flourishing go hand in hand.
